Credit repair doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. Most of the "credit repair companies" charging $99/month are doing things you can do yourself for free. Here's how.
Habit 1: Check Your Report Monthly
You can't fix what you don't see. Use Credit Karma (free) to monitor your TransUnion and Equifax scores. Check it at least once a month. Look for new accounts, balance changes, and anything you don't recognize.
Habit 2: Pay Bills on the Same Day Every Month
Pick a day — the 1st, the 15th, whatever works — and pay every bill on that day. Set calendar reminders. Better yet, set up autopay. Consistency is everything. One late payment can drop your score by 50-100 points and stay on your report for 7 years.
Habit 3: Use the "1-10" Rule for Credit Cards
Make one small purchase per month on each credit card (a coffee, gas, a subscription). Then pay it off. This keeps the card active and shows consistent usage without racking up debt. Ideal utilization: 1-10% of your credit limit.
Habit 4: Request Credit Limit Increases
If you've had a card for 6+ months and have been paying on time, call and ask for a limit increase. If your $1,000 limit becomes $3,000, your $200 balance goes from 20% utilization to 6.7% — and your score goes up. Many issuers let you request this online without a hard inquiry.
Habit 5: Become an Authorized User
If a family member has a credit card with a long history and low balance, ask them to add you as an authorized user. You don't even need to use the card. Their positive history gets reported on your credit file too.
Habit 6: Negotiate "Pay for Delete"
Have an old collection account? Contact the collection agency and offer to pay the full amount in exchange for removing it from your credit report. Get the agreement in writing before you pay. Not all agencies will agree, but many will — especially for smaller amounts.
What Doesn't Work
- Closing old accounts — this hurts your average account age and available credit
- Disputing accurate information — it might temporarily disappear, but it comes back
- Credit repair scams — if someone guarantees a specific score increase, they're lying
Building credit takes time, but buying a home doesn't have to wait. Check your owner-financing eligibility — credit score is only one factor.
